Coelho Neto wrote this classic symbolist novel in 1906 - one of the rare examples of Brazilian Gothic literature written in the early of the 20th century. The book also presents one of the first manifestations of the science fiction in Brazil, exploring themes such as alchemy, science, modernity and sexual conflicts at the time of the Belle Époque in Rio de Janeiro.
Foreword by Dr. Alexander Meireles da Silva, professor at the Federal University of Goiás, and afterword by Mary Ginway, professor at the University of Florida (USA).
